Activity Progress System - Version 1.0.0 - LAUNCH!

Hey folks! It's Isiah. We've been working on this one for quite a while.

It's no secret I'm a fan of farming games. Stardew ValleyCoral IslandStory of Seasons, and some more obscure ones like Immortal Life, Serin Fate... I could go on.

The point is I was playing Rune Factory 3 Special and thinking about how much I loved its passive Skills system, where it uses the "number go up" method of encouraging you to explore every single mechanic it offered, and I suddenly realized that it would be really fun to try to implement it in RPG Maker.

The result: Activity Progress System.

In this system, you can give the player a set of "Activities" that each track their own EXP and level independent from the actor's level. These Activities can, genuinely, be anything the player can do in the game. From something as simple as taking a step in the map to something as specific as dealing at least 20 damage to a specific Enemy with a specific Weapon type.

When an Activity levels up, our Level Up Bonuses parameter is so exhaustive you can give the player whatever reward you can imagine: Bonus stats, learned Skills, gaining Items, and a Common Event/Eval to cover any tracks we couldn't think of.

So, Activities can be anything, Level Up Rewards can be anything, what else can be anything?

Well, that's the thing. We did our best to make sure anything people might want to do with this plugin, they could. It's the most powerful system we've ever made. We want to make this limited only by your imagination, so we need your imagination to tell us what it's missing!

When I first showed the prototype to Neel, the only way to gain EXP was through the Functions that Gain EXP parameter, which immediately blew him away with how powerful it was, but it obviously wasn't very user-friendly. Half of this plugin's development was Neel putting more and more notetags and Plugin Commands on my plate, finding more and more ways to protect users from needing to look at code. I'm pretty happy with where we landed!

Future Features

  • An alternate pop-up system for exp/levels/bonuses
I anticipate this will be the first request we get: some pop-up message system that shows you gaining EXP, or leveling up without using the Message Window so that your gameplay isn't interrupted. Not every game needs an explicit text message, but some games will want a message for every instance of EXP so this would be great for them.

We're thinking something simple; a little message or the bar going up in the top corner of the screen. What would you want from this system?

  • Game Variables inside Plugin Commands

This one is pretty straightforward. Being able to say, for example, "this Activity X should gain Y EXP", where X and Y are both Game Variables, is something you can do in script calls, but it'd be nice to make Plugin Commands be able to do this too, so that you don't have to worry about code if you don't want to. It's just a matter of figuring out how to make MZ's Plugin Command system play nice.

  • Should Weapons/Armors/Enemies have Activities?

Is there a use-case for this? Seriously, let us know what you think.

Neel interjecting here. There's plenty of good use cases for Weapons, Armors and Enemies to have Activities. The most prominent example I can think of is the Level-5 PS2 game series Dark Cloud which have Weapons gaining stats based on what enemies you beat and what gems/parts you upgraded them with. Vagrant Story also had this kinda independent gear upgrading system going on iirc. For Enemies having Activities, I propose the feature of Activity Drain which allow you to drain Activity EXP from an Enemy that has it (don't worry, the Enemy will be able to do that to you as well). This could be a novel progression method in the vein of Blue Mages in Final Fantasy. You all know by now I'm an Akitoshi Kawazu head (hence the SaGa references in our promo video) so I'll always be pushing Isiah to support unorthodox RPG mechanics whenever possible.

Also, we do videos now! Check this one out:

(if you want to give us feedback on the video itself that's fine too it's my first time editing)

As with all of our new releases, we are hoping to make a Week 1 Patch to accommodate the immediate bugs and difficulties that users report in. Please feel free to share your thoughts on the plugin with us either on the Store Page comment section or on the Community Discord. Your feedback will be key to the improvement we want to make to its going forward!
